Introduction to Laser Cutting, Marking or Engraving for Jewellery

All tutors work are professional jewellers or are jewellery trade specialists who are willing to share their expertise and trade secrets with you.

For this course there are two options for course content.
COURSE ONE
1-Day Laser Cutting, Marking or Engraving for Jewellery
An exploratory day for learning how to design and create laser cut Jewellery.
The emphasis being on providing a starting point for creatives to make use of and learn about Laser Cutting design software and cutting hardware technology and provide inspiration and information for future projects.
In this instance to explore the technology and techniques you will learn how to make a laser cut pendant in acrylic or plywood.

You are encouraged to bring some design ideas or a mood board for discussion so that the Pendant you make can reflect your own design style.
​
Course content includes:

Developing Jewellery ideas using the design software to create a vector design file.

Understanding how the design file is used instruct a Laser Cutter/Engraver.

Considering design component make-up

Making a piece of simple Jewellery in Acrylic or Plywood to demonstrate the cutting Engraving process. Compiling component shapes.

How to add acrylic paint into engraved acrylic for added colour.

Add colour washes to plywood before lacquering.

For the purpose of learning Laser Cutting design software techniques and the cutting/engraving process you will make a Pendant in Acrylic or Plywood.
To begin with you will learn how to develop a design idea into a vector design file using Inkscape, which is the software compatible for instructing a Laser to cut shapes and engrave patterns for Jewellery Designs via a cutting pattern.
​Your design file will be sent to the Laser Cutter in the tutor’s studio and you will see your design pieces being cut.
​With tutor guidance you will then complete the desired finish and assemble any components pieces to complete your Pendant.
​
This course is suitable for beginners; however basic computer skills are required.
​
Equipment: You will need to bring your laptop and download Inkscape FREE software, the tutor can provide support with the download if required and a download link will be provided.
​
Materials: A basic amount of materials will be provided to create one pendant of your choice using Acrylic or Plywood (which can also be coloured and/or varnished). You may purchase more materials direct from the tutor if you wish to make another piece if time permits.

A course informing possibilities for anyone wishing to create Laser Cut Jewellery in a variety of materials. You may have access to a Laser Cutter, be considering purchasing a Laser Cutter or intend using the services of a Laser Cutting Bureau for your designs in future.

COURSE TWO
1-Day Design for Laser Cut Acrylic or Plywood Jewellery
An exploratory day for learning how to create designs for Laser Cut Jewellery, specifically in Acrylic or Plywood.
The emphasis of the course is creating successful designs which includes considering effective component make-up and to provide inspiration for future Laser Cut design projects.
With tutor guidance you will learn how to develop a design idea into a vector design laser cutting file using Adobe Illustrator. Illustrator is software compatible for instructing a Laser to cut shapes/components and engrave patterns for Jewellery Designs via a design cutting pattern.
You are encouraged to bring some design ideas or a mood board for discussion so that the designs created can reflect your own style ethos.

A course informing possibilities to creatives, who wish to design and make Laser Cut Jewellery and who do not own a Laser Cutter.
Laser Cutting Machines are expense and delicate to maintain which is why Laser Cutting Services are widely used by Jewellers who create Jewellery in a wide variety of non-precious materials.
On this course your tutor will explain what information a Laser Cutting Bureau requires from designers and how to use them effectively for your own Jewellery work.

Your design is created
In order to show the whole design and cutting process, after your course your tutor will send your selected design file to her preferred Laser Cutting Service supplier and arrange for your pieces to be cut in the materials you have selected (Acrylic or Plywood), these will be posted to you shortly after the course. The Laser Cutting Service cost, materials and postage is included in the course fee.

During your course it may be possible to arrange a short visit to the local Laser Cutting Bureau that the tutor uses.

This course is suitable for beginners; however basic computer skills are required.

Equipment: You will need to bring your laptop and download a free 30 day trial of Adobe Illustrator, the tutor can provide support with the download if required and a download link will be provided.
​
Materials: A basic amount of materials will be provided to create a design of your choice using Acrylic or Plywood. You may purchase additional materials direct from the tutor if you wish to complete several design cutting files, as time permits.
​
A course informing possibilities for anyone wishing to design or create Laser Cut Jewellery in a variety of materials who does not have their own Laser Cutting Machine and intends to use the services of a Laser Cutting Bureau for your Jewellery Designs in future.

IMPORTANT NOTE
DESIGNS & INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY
On occasion students may create a mood board containing found images collated as inspiration for future projects.
​
Found images / designs will be the Intellectual Property of original artist and this means the tutor cannot show students how to recreate these designs even if the material used is different. To do would be an infringement of Intellectual Property Rights. (Similar to Copyright)

What is the course date?
The course date is set by you, so that you can undertake a tuition session at your convenience.
All dates / times of course sessions are subject to tutor availability.

Start time are generally 10am GMT London Time but this can be adjusted slightly to suit.
​
About Materials
The tutor provides materials for you to create one pendant to enable practise of the design & Laser process.
​
You pay the tutor directly for any additional materials if your progress and time allows you to make more than one item.
​

About the Course Fee
A large portion of the course fee quoted is paid to the tutor, because, it’s their expertise that you pay for.
​
Where there is a selection of tutors, course, fee's may vary due to individual tutor requirements for teaching.
In addition a there is a small fee for arranging your course which is included in the total course fee.

Payment
Course fee payment is required in advanced by BACS Bank Transfer invoice or IBAN for international students.

Payment Terms
Payment is required in advance and payments are handled safely and securely by BACS Bank Transfer invoicing (IBAN for International students.

Instalments
Some courses are available to pay in instalments, whereby a non-refundable deposit is required to book your course date. Please ask for details if this is of interest to you.
Booking Terms

Once you have booked a *cancellation fee will be deducted from your refund if you cancel your course up to and including 14 days prior to the start of the course once your payment has been received.

Cancellations received within 14 days of the course date are not eligible for a refund, however you may re-arrange your course for one other date if you wish.

Should we need to cancel your course due to unforeseen circumstances we will refund your course fee in full.
