Have you seen the super new book from Contemporary Jewellers Nina Gilbey and Bekkie Ora Cheeseman?

They have designed this gorgeous book to be a comprehensive "On the Bench" experimental guide. Published by Crowood Press this beautiful book covers a range of techniques and materials, which can be used to bring excitement, meaning and interest to your own Jewellery designs.

A definite must for every Jeweller's book wish list.

Decorative textures and colour are integral to the design of every piece of jewellery. Within this book, you will find a range of techniques and materials, that can be used to bring excitement, meaning and interest to your Jewellery designs.

Written in collaboration by two experienced designer-makers and tutors, it encourages you to experiment, make samples, bend the rules (safely) and see what results are possible, before following the detailed technical advice to apply the techniques to your work.

“Colour and textures in Jewellery” is a collaboration between two professional designer/makers and teachers of jewellery.

Bekkie and Nina have produced a timeless technical coffee table book for your everyday use.

The authors’ aim was to write a book that is accessible and usable at every stage of making from the beginner to the professional maker as well as anyone who is interested in how colour and texture are introduced to a piece of jewellery.

Content includes:

Embossing - Techniques include hammering, stamping and roll printing to imprint a pattern, design and details onto the surface of the work.

Removing metal - Explains how to create texture or pattern by removing selected areas from the surface of a piece of metal: techniques include engraving and etching.

Heat application - Techniques include reticulation, granulation and casting.

Colour - Techniques that involve incorporating different coloured metals in a piece of jewellery, such as combining metals, chemical colouring and enamelling.

Mixed Media

Further ideas and techniques cover the use of mixed media - resin, wood, glass, anodised aluminium and gemstones

Exercises demonstrate Technique and experiment with the process, including design development sketches and examples of samples and finished pieces.

Books Authors

Colour And Textures in Jewellery Bekkie Ora Cheeseman trained in fine art, sculpture, kiln-formed glass and jewellery and her work seeks to produce pieces that are both sculptural and experimental. She is interested in exploiting the opportunities given by the properties of materials, and the possibilities of techniques, to make work that inspires questions and playfulness.

Bekkie has been writing and teaching 2D design and jewellery manufacture accredited courses since 2009.

Nina Gilbey was trained in Jewellery & Silversmithing at The Cass and later graduated with an MA from the School of Jewellery in Birmingham in 2000. With a background in Fine Art, she is interested in the relationship between line and form, and how negative spaces create a solid void. She is passionate about working with metal, using traditional techniques to explore and challenge its inherent qualities and she has been teaching the subject since 2000.
